GICA, LafargeHolcim and Biskria are expected to export 0.5Mta of cement and clinker from Algeria by the end of 2018 – mainly via the port of Djendjen, according to Abdesselem Bouab, general manager of the port. Since May, GICA has completed three export deliveries for a total of 110,000t of cement. The company’s total contract totals 200,000t and represents a value of over US$4m. Construction on the Ben-Zireg cement works will be started in the first quarter of 2015, said Abdelkader Bouaichaoui, CEO of Société Saoura Ciment, a subsidiary of Algeria’s Groupe Industriel des Ciments d’Algerie (GICA). “We expect to sign the contracts required to realise this important industrial project before the end of December with a Chinese partner, so they can start work on the plant,” he said. Cement imports into Algeria have doubled in the first four months of 2013, surpassing US$116.2m when compared with US$53.5m for the equivalent period last year – an increase of 117.5 per cent, according to Algeria’s National Centre for Customs Information and Statistics. The Cement Industry Group of Algeria (Gica), which recently announced it plans to 450,000t of cement, will begin the construction of two cement plants with a total capacity of 3Mta. These plants will be located in Béchar and Relizane.
